Artist Statement

Name Romellie Zionani An Artist statement is a short piece of writing about ones work. My Art work is based on humanity of African culture and Skin disorders. The human race which reflects internationality. This shows race, culture and complicated physical disorders on the skin. There are varieties of culture in my work. The culture and heritage focuses on the African descent. To witch this is exaggerated to show how African people are displayed in society. The people of colour are accepted for their unique differences from others. The unique differences are varieties of a skin tones and texture. I have found research based on skin conditions known as vitiligo and Albinism. This shows how people of colour can have multiple shades from black, brown and even white. This also reflects on colourism and how only a lighter shade is deemed privileged in society. I have a passion with portraiture. This includes seeing a person or object and drawing them. I decided to focus on black culture because being a black British woman, I have a desire to reflect on my race and identity. This shows African people, their traditions, appearance, and skin tone. This shows how in my opinion god creates unique looking human beings, in which there is no such regards to perfection. Life is somewhat like a fairy-tale with all these creatures. The processes in my work are through sketching using pencil of different shades. Once I have applied shapes to scale out proportions of the facial features, I then use tracing paper to capture almost accurate parts of eyes, nose and mouth. I then use heavy dark pencil around the shadows and smudge the pencil in areas of the face and body. Once completed to add highlight, I use a rubber to sharply erase and create a form of light. This evidently concluded to a 3d dimensional pencil drawing sketch.
